“THERE’S A CRACK IN EVERYTHING THAT’S HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN“, Leonard Cohenm Singer, Songwriter
……………… is one of my favourite sayings – and it’s a powerful reminder of the role that vulnerability plays in mental well-being.
The phrase, originally coined by the wonderful late Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, (I was actually lucky enough to have seen him live at the 02 arena in London a number of years ago just prior to his passing) suggests that it is through our imperfections and vulnerabilities we are able to find light and healing.
The phrase acknowledges that even in times of darkness, there is still a glimmer of hope and that our imperfections and vulnerabilities can lead to greater understanding and growth. This statement can be incredibly applicable to someone’s mental well-being and personal growth.
Mental well-being is not about perfection; it is about acceptance, growth and resilience.
It is not about hiding our flaws and vulnerabilities, rather acknowledging and embracing them.
When we try to hide or ignore our struggles, we are essentially covering up the cracks that let the light in.
The light that enters through our cracks can take many forms. It can be the light of hope, of healing, of understanding, of compassion, of sloughing off the negative emotions so with the light a better mental health can be achieved.
When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and open, we create space for these forms of light to enter our life and guide us towards a greater sense of well-being.
Yes, I know only too well how very hard it can be to open up. However, to heal and become the person we deserve to be, we need to let go of that pain. As the saying goes,
“For things to change, you need to change,
for things to get better you need to get better”
When we face challenges or struggles, it can be tempting to try and bury or ignore them. However, by embracing these difficulties and allowing ourselves to feel vulnerable, we open ourselves up to learning and growing from our experiences. This can help us to build resilience and develop a stronger sense of self.
By acknowledging our cracks we can allow ourselves to see the light that exists within.
It can be challenging to recognise our own strengths and positive qualities when we are struggling with our mental health. However, by embracing our imperfections and vulnerabilities, we can also see the unique qualities that make us the special person we are.
Embracing vulnerability can be challenging, as it requires us to confront our fears and face our imperfections head-on.
However, when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we create a sense of authenticity and connection with ourselves and others.
We become more resilient and better equipped to handle life’s challenges. Moreover, acknowledging and accepting our vulnerabilities can also help us to overcome feelings of shame and self-judgment.
When it comes to mental health, many of us may feel ashamed or embarrassed about our struggles. We may feel like we are alone in our experiences or that our issues make us weak or inferior to others.
However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Acknowledging and embracing our vulnerabilities is a crucial step in maintaining our mental well-being.
Remember is okay not to be okay – we shouldn’t shy away from seeking help from a qualified accredited practitioner.
When we recognise that our struggles and imperfections are a natural part of the human experience, we can cultivate a sense of self-compassion and learn to treat ourselves with greater kindness and understanding.
It’s really important to recognise that we all have our own set of cracks or imperfections.
No one is perfect, and all of us have experienced hardships or challenges in our life that may have left us feeling broken or flawed. It is crucial to acknowledge these cracks and understand that they are a natural part of the human experience.
By accepting our cracks and imperfections, we allow ourselves to be more authentic and genuine. We can connect with others on a deeper level and feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. Furthermore, embracing our vulnerabilities can also lead to personal growth and development.
This saying pertains to mental well-being by reminding us of the power of vulnerability and acceptance.
It is through our cracks and imperfections that we can find light and healing.
When we embrace our vulnerabilities and allow ourselves to be authentic and open, we create space for compassion, understanding, and growth.
By accepting our cracks, we can connect with others on a deeper level, grow and develop as individuals, and recognise the light that exists within us.
It is crucial to remember that it is okay to be imperfect, and that our flaws and challenges can lead to greater understanding and personal growth.
So, embrace the cracks – and let the light to come in!
